With cash back, you can reward loyalty members by returning a percentage of their order value as Shopify store credit. Instead of earning points and converting them to a reward, members receive store credit directly to their Shopify account after each qualifying purchase. They can see their balance in the floating widget and apply it at checkout on their next order.
❗ Cash back is available on all Okendo loyalty plans. To use cash back, your store must use Shopify new customer accounts (not legacy accounts) and have store credit enabled. See Store credits in Loyalty for setup steps.

Prerequisites
Before cash back can be issued, make sure the following are in place on your Shopify store:
Shopify new customer accounts must be active. Store credit is not available on legacy accounts.
Store credit must be enabled in Shopify Admin > Settings > Customer Accounts.
Okendo Loyalty must be granted the Shopify permission to access store credits. You will see a prompt in Okendo Admin the first time you configure cash back.
For full setup instructions, see Store credits in Loyalty.
Set up cash back on the Place an Order earn rule
Cash back is configured on the Place an Order earn rule. When you switch the reward type from points to store credit, members earn a percentage of their order value as store credit instead of points.
Go to Okendo Admin > Loyalty > Configure > Loyalty Rules.
Open the Place an Order earn rule.
Under Reward, change the reward type from Points to Store Credit.
Enter your Cash Back Rate as a percentage of order value (for example, 5% cash back on a $100 order issues $5 store credit to the member).
Optionally, set a Wait Time before store credits are awarded. This is recommended to align with your store's return or refund window and acts as a fraud deterrent.
Optionally, configure Tier Variations if you want different cash back rates to apply per VIP tier.
Select Save.
💡 Setting a wait time does not affect the calculation. The cash back rate is based on the promotion active at the time the order is placed, not when the credits are issued.
Configure tier variations for cash back
If your program uses VIP tiers, you can set a different cash back rate for each tier. Higher-tier members earn proportionally more, which drives tier engagement without adding points complexity.
For example: Bronze 3%, Silver 5%, Gold 8%.
Tier variation rates are configured within the earn rule under Tier Variations.
How cash back works for shoppers who enroll after placing an order
If a shopper places qualifying orders before enrolling in your loyalty program, Okendo tracks the cash back they would have earned. When they enroll, any eligible orders within a recent look-back window are automatically applied to their store credit balance. This is handled by Okendo in the background and does not require any configuration on your part.
Set up cash back promotions
You can temporarily boost the store credit members earn during a promotional period, such as BFCM or a loyalty anniversary event.
Go to Okendo Admin > Loyalty > Promotions.
Select + New Promotion.
Under Apply to Earning Rules, select the Place an Order rule.
Choose a promotion type:
Fixed: Members receive their standard cash back plus a flat bonus store credit amount on every qualifying order. For example, a $10 fixed bonus on top of a 5% rate means a member placing a $100 order earns $5 + $10 = $15 store credit.
Multiplier: The store credit earned is multiplied by a set factor. For example, a 2x multiplier on a 5% rate means a member placing a $100 order earns $10 instead of $5. Members see the active promotion in the floating widget.
Set your promotion schedule and save.
💡 If you use tier variations, the multiplier is applied to each tier's specific rate. For example, a Gold member earning 8% under a 2x promotion earns 16% during the promotional period.
⚠️ Two promotions cannot run at the same time if they both target the same earn rule for the same VIP tier.
How cash back displays to members
Once cash back is active, Okendo updates your onsite displays automatically.
Points preview: The points preview widget is updated to show the store credit amount a shopper would earn on their current order, rather than a points value. This updates dynamically based on cart or order value and appears at both the product page level and the cart or order level.
Earn rule tiles: The earn rule tile for the Place an Order rule is updated across all onsite surfaces to reflect the store credit reward: the floating widget, customer account extensions, the loyalty landing page, and post-review loyalty modules.
Store credit balance: Members' current Shopify store credit balance is surfaced across the floating widget, loyalty landing page, checkout, and customer account extensions. The balance reflects the live Shopify balance, including any store credit earned, spent, or expired from any source.
View and manage cash back transactions
View cash back activity across all members
Cash back transactions appear in the Activity view as earning events with the rule type Place an Order. Each transaction shows:
Status: Pending (within the wait time window), Completed (store credit issued), or Declined (clawed back or manually declined)
Store Credit Amount: The dollar value issued
Date: Date of the originating order
You can filter by Event: Earning, Status, and Date range, and search by member email.
To access: Okendo Admin > Loyalty > Activity.
View cash back activity for a specific member
To see a single member's full cash back history, go to Profiles > Customers > Profiles and open their profile. This shows all transactions with the same Pending, Completed, and Declined status breakdown.
This is the primary tool for resolving member queries, for example why a member did not receive cash back on a specific order or why an amount was deducted after a refund.
Manually decline a cash back transaction
If you need to reverse a cash back transaction, you can manually decline it from the Activity view:
Go to Okendo Admin > Loyalty > Activity.
Locate the transaction. Filter by Event: Earning and search by member email if needed.
Select the actions icon next to the transaction.
Select Decline Store Credit Earned.
Enter a member-facing reason (shown in the member's activity history) and an internal reason (visible in admin only).
Confirm to decline.
Once declined, the transaction is marked as Declined and the corresponding store credit is removed from the member's Shopify balance.
⚠️ Declining a cash back transaction removes real monetary value from a member's store credit balance. Always use a clear, accurate member-facing reason.
How refunds affect cash back
When an order is refunded, Okendo attempts to claw back the store credit originally issued for that order. If the member has already spent some or all of that store credit, Okendo claws back as much as is available, up to the original amount. A member's store credit balance will never be taken below zero.
The outcome of any clawback attempt is recorded in the Activity log as a Declined transaction.
❗ Because store credits have real monetary value, merchants should be aware of the partial clawback limitation before launching a cash back program.
Cash back emails and ESP events
Member notification email
Okendo includes a native Direct Reward Earned email template that notifies members when store credit has been issued after a qualifying order. You can preview and customize this at Okendo Admin > Loyalty > Emails.
⚠️ Loyalty emails are treated as promotional, not transactional. Okendo checks its own unsubscribe list before sending but does not cross-check marketing opt-in status in your ESP (for example Klaviyo). If you use an ESP, we recommend rebuilding this notification within your ESP to ensure your own marketing preference controls are respected.
ESP events
When a member earns cash back, Okendo fires the following events to connected ESPs:
Okendo Loyalty Store Credit Awarded
ActionDescriptionStore Credit AmountStore Credit Expiry DateStore Credit Balance
💡 Store Credit Amount and Store Credit Balance are passed as formatted currency values (for example, $5.00). Klaviyo does not natively support currency formatting, so you may need to handle display formatting within your template logic.
For Klaviyo setup, see Integrating Loyalty with Klaviyo.
Shopify Flow
Cash back earn events can be used as triggers in Shopify Flow, enabling downstream automations such as sending a custom notification when cash back is issued or tagging a customer when they reach a store credit milestone.
For setup, see Use Okendo Loyalty with Shopify Flow.
FAQs
Can I run a points reward and cash back reward on the Place an Order earn rule at the same time?
No. Cash back replaces points on the Place an Order earn rule. You switch the reward type from Points to Store Credit, so the two cannot run simultaneously on the same rule. Other earn rules (such as Leave a Review or Refer a Friend) continue to issue points as normal if set up with points as the reward.
Can members use store credit from cash back alongside other discount codes?
Store credit is applied natively by Shopify at checkout and is treated as a payment method rather than a discount code. This means it can generally be used alongside other discounts, subject to your Shopify checkout configuration.
What happens to cash back if an order is partially paid with store credit?
Cash back is calculated on the full order value. For liability tracking in the interim, use Shopify's native store credit reports.
Does cash back work with Shopify POS?
Members can use their store credit balance in Shopify POS. Cash back earning at POS follows the same earn rule configuration as online orders. For setup, see Integrating Loyalty with Shopify POS.
Can I see how much store credit liability my program has outstanding?
For full liability reporting, use Shopify's native store credit reports, which show store credit issued, used, and expired.
