Set up coupon rewards as a direct reward for earn rule actions

Give shoppers an instant perk such as a percentage discount, fixed amount off, free shipping or free product the moment they complete a loyalty action, with no points balance or redemption step involved.

With direct rewards, you can give shoppers a perk the moment they complete an action in your loyalty program — no points required. Instead of earning points to redeem later, shoppers receive a ready-to-use coupon automatically, as soon as they qualify.

This article covers how to set up coupon rewards across the earn rules that support them.

❗ Coupon rewards are rolling out to select merchants first via Early Access, ahead of general availability. If you don't see the Coupon reward type option on your earn rules yet, it isn't available on your account yet.

⚠️ This is different from the coupon-based rewards under Redemption Rules, which shoppers redeem by spending points they've already earned. Coupon rewards on earn rules are issued automatically and don't use your reward currency at all.

In this article, you will learn about;

How direct reward coupons work

When you configure a coupon as a direct reward for an earn rule, shoppers receive a ready-to-use coupon automatically when they complete the qualifying action. There's no points balance to accumulate and no separate redemption step — the coupon is issued and ready to use the moment they qualify (pending any wait period you've set).

You can choose the coupon type per earn rule: a percentage discount, a fixed amount off, free shipping, or a free product. You can also set optional expiry, minimum purchase, and collection restrictions on the coupon, the same way you would for a points redemption coupon.

Once issued, the coupon appears on the shopper's Loyalty page, floating widget under My Perks, customer account, and via an email notification.

💡 Each earn rule can only use one reward type at a time — either Points or Coupon. Switching an earn rule from Points to Coupon only affects new qualifying actions going forward; anything already earned as points is not affected.

Setting up a coupon reward for an earn rule

The steps below apply to all earn rules that support coupon rewards.

  1. Select the earn rule you want to configure.

  2. Under Reward, change the reward type from Points to Coupon.

  3. Choose the Coupon type: Percentage discount, Fixed amount off, Free shipping, or Free product.

  4. Enter the value for your chosen coupon type (or select the product, if you chose Free product).

  5. Under Description, optionally add a Title and Notification text to customize what the shopper sees when they earn the coupon.

  6. Under Restrictions, configure any applicable options (see below).

  7. Select Save.

💡 If you're setting this up for the first time, the coupon type and value fields will look familiar — they use the same options as the Fixed Value Coupon, Fixed Percentage Coupon, Free Shipping, and Free Product redemption rules.

Restrictions and configuration options

Coupon expiry

You can set an expiry period (in days) so the coupon must be used within a given timeframe after it's issued, or it will expire.

  • Under Restrictions, select Coupon expires after and enter the number of days.

  • Leave this blank if you don't want the coupon to expire.

⚠️ We recommend setting a coupon expiry. Without one, coupons can accumulate indefinitely and create a liability for your business.

Minimum purchase amount

You can set a minimum purchase amount (in your store's currency) that an order must reach before the coupon can be used.

⚠️ Minimum purchase amounts are set in your store's base currency. If you allow orders in other currencies, currency fluctuations may affect whether an order meets the minimum required to use the coupon.

Collection restriction

You can restrict the coupon to one or more collections, so it only applies to products from those collections.

Subscription discounts

If you have subscription discounts enabled, you can set the Purchase Type to One-time purchase, Subscription, or Both, so the coupon can be used on these purchase types.

FAQs

Can a shopper earn the same coupon reward multiple times?

It depends on the earn rule. For one-time actions like joining the program or celebrating a birthday, the reward can only be earned once (or once per year, for birthdays and anniversaries). For repeatable actions like social follows, the usual per-rule limits on that earn rule still apply.

What happens to points already earned if I switch an earn rule from Points to Coupon?

Nothing changes for points shoppers have already earned. Switching the reward type only applies to new qualifying actions going forward.

How is this different from the coupon-based rewards under Redemption Rules?

Redemption Rules (like Fixed Value Coupon or Fixed Percentage Coupon) let shoppers spend points they've accumulated to redeem a coupon. Coupon rewards on earn rules skip points entirely — the coupon is issued automatically as soon as a shopper completes the qualifying action.

Can I offer both points and a coupon on the same earn rule?

No. Each earn rule can only use one reward type at a time — either Points or Coupon.

Will coupon rewards show up separately in my Loyalty reporting?

Coupons issued this way are attributed to your loyalty program in Okendo reporting, but they aren't yet broken out as a distinct reward type from other coupon-based rewards. A more detailed breakout is planned for a future update.
