If you receive reviews in multiple languages, or if you offer your storefront to customers in multiple languages, you can follow these steps to configure Okendo so customers can translate and read reviews in their preferred language.

💡 Providing translations of your reviews into multiple languages helps to increase your reach across different markets, extending your social proof and ultimately increasing customer trust.

❗️Review translations requires the Widget Plus reviews widget. Please contact customer support for help migrating to Widget Plus.

In this guide, you will learn how to;

Enabling review translations

Review translations is a global setting for all widgets, it is configured in your Okendo admin panel by going to Reviews > On Site Displays > Global Settings > Translations

🔔 In some instances, there may be a minor performance impact the first time a review translation is requested. There is no impact on subsequent translation requests as the translation is pulled from the cached version stored by Okendo.

There are three setting options for review translations:

  • Off: Disables review translations for your site.

  • Per Review: Allows customers to generate a translation on demand.

  • On Load: Translates all reviews for a customer as a widget is loaded.

Per Review translation

Once configured a customer has the option to translate a review into the language as set in your Localization settings.

To translate a review, the customer must click the “Translate to” link.

The translated review will display a message highlighting the original language the review has been translated from. The customer can also choose to switch back to the original review language by clicking on the link “Show original”.

🔔 The translation state of a review is remembered for each customer. If a customer chooses to view a review translation, the state of that review translation will be retained as the customer navigates, filters and sorts reviews in the widget.

On Load translations

When enabled, On Load will automatically translate all reviews as the widget loads. Reviews are translated into the default language set in your localization settings or the current language selected on your storefront by your customer if the Shopify Markets override is enabled.

Localization settings

You can find your localization settings by going to Settings > User.

Setting your default language

The language setting under localization determines which language Okendo widgets, emails, and the review capture default to and display to your customers. This setting is most relevant if you have a single language configured in Shopify and are not using Shopify Markets.

Enabling Shopify Markets override

❗️Selecting the Shopify Markets override does not translate any custom content in your emails or product attributes.

Enabling the Shopify Markets override allows your customers to generate a review translation based on their selected language on your storefront.

This option also presents key fields in the Okendo Reviews widgets in the language your customer has selected.

Supported languages for review translation

Okendo currently supports 18 languages for localization and translation. Refer to the following table for the complete list of currently supported languages.

Using review translations with Shopify Headless

The review translation capability works with Shopify Headless. To ensure compatibility, your front end must set the Shopify Javascript variable for locale:

window.shopify.locale

Setting this variable with your customer's selected language ensures that the Okendo widget sets the relative translation locale correctly.

FAQs

  • How can I report incorrect translations?

  • It is not possible to directly flag incorrect review translations.

  • How can I view, edit or export translations?

  • It is not possible to view, edit or export translations through the Okendo admin platform. To view a specific translation a user will need to navigate to the review on the storefront.
